On October 2, the Mostyn Moreno Foundation held its 3rd annual Joe Moreno Charity Classic presented by AT&T. The annual event features a VIP reception, a tournament, live auction, awards presentation, and dinner. The tournament is named for former state representative Joe E Moreno who passed away in 2005. His sister Sarah makes it clear that Joe treated his friends very well and wants the entire experience of our sponsors and golfers to reflect Joe’s standards.
On May 6, 2005, Texas State Representative Joe E Moreno’s died in an automobile accident. Our foundation bears his name. I wanted to take the time and tell you that I know Joe. Now, that might be considered an odd statement when I tell you that I have never met Joe. But, I know him.
You see, I believe you can know a man by the company he keeps. I know Joe because I know Joe’s mother, Alice. Mrs. Moreno is an elegant woman. She is easily approachable and quick to recall fond memories of Joe. She smiles such a lovely smile when she thinks of Joe. This matriarch holds family dearly and gives me a clear view of the home Joe was raised. Yes, I know Joe.
The Mostyn-Moreno Foundation opens the giving season early this year with their annual “Christmas Lights Program.” The Foundation organizes and funds a Christmas party for the Special Education Students of the Henderson, Tyler, Jacksonville, Athens and Whitehouse Independent School Districts.
Each student receives a $50 gift card from the foundation. The children are then taken to a retail store where they may spend their allowance as they desire, with math and social skills guidance from their instructors. Some students buy for themselves and others are amazing and want to buy for others. These students are served primarily in a full special education classroom due to significant disabilities and delays. It is truly an amazing day for all that get to participate.
Following their shopping spree, the students and their parents are taken to a special Christmas Lunch.
Houston, TX — Houston’s Mostyn Moreno Foundation announced that it will once again expand its Christmas Lights holiday giving program to serve special needs students at the Buna ISD and Kirbyville CISD.
The Mostyn Moreno Foundation’s Christmas Lights program organizes and funds a unique educational experience for special education students across Texas. This year, over 900 students in 13 public school districts from Galveston, Southeast Texas and East Texas will be taken on a special educational field trip where students will use math, decision-making, social skills and practice important life skills with guidance from their teachers to purchase their own holiday gifts with funds provided by the foundation. Afterwards, the foundation will then treat the students, teachers, and family members to a special lunch.
HOUSTON — The Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Foundation recently added seven independent school districts in Texas to its annual holiday program, known as “Christmas Lights”.
The additions bring the total number of participating school districts in the “Christmas Lights” program to 19. The program is intended to teach basic life skills, such as shopping and budgeting, to students with special needs. New districts joining the “Christmas Lights” program include Carlisle ISD, Laneville ISD, Leverett’s Chapel ISD, Mt. Enterprise ISD, Overton ISD, Tatum ISD, and West Rusk Consolidated County ISD.
HOUSTON —The Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Educational Foundation has awarded a matching grant valued at $5,000 to the H.E.A.R.T Program of Houston, Texas. The grant will match every donation the HEART Program receives toward their “Give These HEARTs a Ride” campaign from April 2, 2014 to May 29, 2014.
The “Give These HEARTs a Ride” campaign is seeking donations to help the H.E.A.R.T. Program acquire a 2014 KIA Sedona LX minivan. This vehicle will be used to help transport participants of H.E.A.R.T. from home to training sessions and jobs. Many of the members have jobs, receiving minimum wage or above at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium, where the H.E.A.R.T. Program has been the exclusive vendor of Papa John’s Pizza since 2012. Transportation is vital to the success of our programs and helping adults with mental disabilities achieve their full success.
AUSTIN, TEXAS – This week, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) began site preparation for their new headquarters. The 20,000 square foot facility will be located in northeast Austin and will cost $7.1 million to complete. Steve and Amber Mostyn, founders of the Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Educational Foundation (Mostyn Moreno Foundation), helped kick-off fundraising efforts by donating $2 million to the SOTX Capital Campaign. The new headquarters will be named the Christi Stanley Building in memory of Amber Mostyn’s mother.
HOUSTON —The Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Educational Foundation (Mostyn Moreno Foundation) is celebrating the end of the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) by remembering its active participation in the month long eventThe Houston rodeo begins at the end of February and runs until the end of March. This year included a number of activities supported by the Mostyn Moreno Foundation, such as Ritch’s Little Raiders and the Foundation Appreciation Party. This year’s event ended on March 23rd.
“We had an absolute blast at this year’s rodeo,” said Monte Osburn, executive director of the Mostyn Moreno Foundation. “It was really nice to have so much community participation at our events. Sharing great food with great people is a big part of the rodeo and this year kept that tradition going strong.”

GROVES — On April 14th, the Port Neches – Groves Independent School District’s school board awarded the district’s “Spotlight on Excellence” award to Steve and Amber Mostyn and Monte Osburn. The award recipients were nominated by PNG ISD’s Special Education Director Jeff Kuchar for their ongoing involvement with the district’s life skills students. The Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Educational Foundation (Mostyn Moreno Foundation) has operated their “Christmas Lights” program and “V.I.P. Day” program within the PNG ISD for several years. The foundation was founded by Steve and Amber Mostyn. Monte Osburn serves as the foundation’s executive director.
HOUSTON —The Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Foundation (Mostyn Moreno Foundation) is celebrating its second year collaborating with the Ritch’s Raiders BBQ tent and “Ritch’s Little Raiders” at the 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Cook Off.
The cook off traditionally marks the beginning of the rodeo season in Houston. Hundreds of teams from around the world compete in various barbecue categories, such as Best Brisket, Best Chicken, and Best Ribs. This year was yet another success for Ritch’s Raiders BBQ Team with the team finishing in the top 20 percent of all competitors.
